Since 1994 the City of Federal Way, together with the City of Federal Way Diversity Commission has sponsored the Martin Luther King Jr. Day Community Celebration to honor Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. for his contributions to humanity, to encourage peace and harmony amongst the people of Federal Way, and to provide a venue for our city of promise to experience the magnificent power of a unified community.

In the past, each Celebration has had various themes with a clear focus as set goals to achieve. For 2009 the theme is entitled, “Take Action…Engage the Dream” with its focus on Youth Development.

As with past MLK Celebrations, the 2009 MLK Weekend will be a culmination of three events.

It begins on Wednesday, January 14th, with a Teen Summit, continues with the Community Service Project on Saturday, January 17th with a City-Wide Food Drive to benefit the Multi-Service Center, and finally concludes with the Community Celebration on Monday, January 19th at Decatur High School.

Both the City of Federal Way and the Federal Way Diversity Commission ask for your support and help in the second part of its MLK Celebration Weekend, the City-Wide Food Drive.

Mission Statement: The purpose of the MLK Day Community Service Project is to provide an outlet for members of the community to come together in a united purpose – to produce some altruistic work, to show that individuals, from a myriad of backgrounds and with a myriad of talents, can work in concert for a common good.

Please help us support our community mission in allowing us to provide much needed assistance to the Multi-Service Center Food Bank by volunteering your time by staffing one of the chosen stores that have agreed to host this special event.

Again, the City-Wide Food Drive is scheduled to occur on Saturday, January 17, 2009, 9:00am to 3:00pm.

For more information and to sign-up for this event please contact the City of Federal Way’s Volunteer and Neighborhood Programs Coordinator, Kimberly Paterno at 253-835-2654 or e-mail her at
