Keep your eyes peeled for water quality violations, call the City’s new spill hotline

Whether you observe a fuel leak from an auto accident, someone rinsing paint brushes into a storm drain, or if soap suds show up in the ditch every time your neighbor does their laundry, call the City of Federal Way’s new Spill Hotline, 253.835.2700 (during business hours) or 253.946.6416 after hours and on holidays/weekends.

The City is asking residents to do their part in protecting local water quality by reporting spills, illegal dumping or illicit connections to our natural waterways or storm drain system. City staff will respond 24/7 to hotline calls. Calls can be anonymous, but it is important to leave as much detail about the problem as possible.

The City has several educational programs designed to raise awareness that all City storm drains flow into our lakes, streams, wetlands and the Puget Sound with little or no treatment. However, spills and water quality violations still occur and sometimes go unreported. You really can make a difference by reporting spills or illegal activities which could affect water quality.

For more information about the City’s surface water quality program, visit www.cityoffederalway.com/swm or contact Dan Smith, Water Quality Coordinator, 253.835-2756 or daniel.smith@cityoffederalway.com.
