Citizen survey: Give us the good, the bad and the ugly

How are we doing? What’s working? What isn’t? For the first time in its 18-year history, the City of Federal Way is conducting a comprehensive, scientifically valid citizen survey.

The City is contracting with the National Research Center, based out of Boulder, Colo., to randomly sample 3,000 Federal Way households by mail, another 400 households by phone, and an unlimited amount online. The NRC’s survey, a standardized instrument used by many other cities across the country, will have a plus or minus 3% margin of error. The survey includes a comparison report with other participating cities.

Satisfaction with City services, public transportation, diversity, sense of community, rate of growth, quality of life issues and more are all up for comment. The City will use the results to improve services and drive its yearly strategic planning and budget processes. The results will be compiled and presented to the City this fall.

  • Hardcopy surveys mailed: Aug. 4-15
  • Telephone calls conducted: Sept. 2-16
  • Web survey open: Sept. 29-Oct. 17
The survey will cost $29,400 and was approved in the 2007-2008 biennial budget process.
