City to hire graffiti eraser

Federal Way plans to hire a part-time employee to paint over graffiti this summer.

City Manager Neal Beets announced June 19 at the City Council meeting that graffiti remains a problem in Federal Way. The city is serious about removing freshly painted graffiti within 48 hours of its discovery, he said.

Hylebos Park

Bookmark and Share

My daughter and my dad and I went to Hylebos park today. I had heard for some time that there was this hidden park along my commute. (It's not as hidden now, they've built a nice new parking lot on S. 348th. St.)

On the property, there are two historic structures: Denny Cabin and Barker Cabin. You can learn more from http://www.federalwayhistory.org/.

Denny Cabin
Barker Cabin
The park is mostly elevated boardwalk. It's really neat.
Sadly, there is some graffiti. But overall, the park is pretty well maintained. The boardwalk replaced after the large storm last winter is uneven, and there's still some unrepaired areas, but it's all well-marked with bright paint so you won't trip or fall.

Olympic View Park

Bookmark and Share

Federal Way's "Olympic View Park" is a nice little park. It's a greenbelt with a paved path connecting two parts of the Twin Lakes area together. In the middle is a clearing with a nice play area for children. While there is some graffiti, there's also evidence of past attempts to clean up the graffiti in a nice way -- using colors chosen to more closely match the original wood, versus the typical beige slap and dash. I don't know if this is the work of a neighbor or The City, but they ought to be commended. The park itself was almost trash free and had a garbage can chained to a tree nearby. I picked up the few pieces of trash that hadn't made it into the can. The set itself is freshly painted and despite the graffiti looks very nice. Spray paint on the path also indicates that work will probably be done soon to repair areas of the path that have been pushed up by tree roots.

So not all of these are of graffiti, some are just to show how well this park is maintained, despite the graffiti.

Apparently, this is an easy target. The original graffiti that covered the back of the store has been painted over, but now the side of the building has a tag.

This is a small utility box, almost hidden in the brush. Yet someone's taken the time to tag it. The park is otherwise clean and well maintained. Probably the Twin Lakes Homeowner's Assocation's responsibility to repaint.

Burned Down House

Bookmark and Share

32821 42nd Ave SW
Federal Way, WA 98023

Again, not exactly graffiti, but I wanted to post this here to show that Federal Way has really dragged its feet at getting this house demolished. It apparently caught fire twice one night and has been unoccupied ever since. A small section of damaged fence barely covers the garage and a red tag appears on the side of the house. Apparently, the owner is in jail and he was in the process of selling it to someone else. So the ownership is in question, the financing is in question and it was apparently uninsured. You'd think that the City of Federal Way could declare this a public nuisance, a danger to the community, or something, and have it flattened. As it sits, it does no one any good, especially the surrounding neighbors. I wouldn't be surprised if some continue to live there only because the value of their home is so depressed to be next to that. But as a piece of property, it could probably fetch $200k at least. (Zillow humorously puts the value at $413k.)

(Update: In a few months, 3 years will have passed. At that point, the City or the Twin Lakes Homeowner's Assocation will be able to sue the bank to force them to bulldoze the house.)
